The Roadcast system of MOWIS offers high resolution, high frequency, individual weather information and warnings for the driver. This system supplies precise weather information such as rain, fog, snowfall, and the probability of ice and high winds for Austria. These short-term predictions are for roads along a certain route.
Local and regional short term-weather predictions for the next 2-3 hrs (Nowcasting) are broadcast on radio including RDS/TMC, mobile phones and PDA's.
With the smooth integration of alarm systems and floating car data to the verification and inquiry of the actual condition, new Nowcasting procedures include features such as kinematic extrapolation and dynamic downscaling. Automatic recognition of convective cells from the METEOSAT-7 IR satellite image, temperature and wind Nowcasting is also available.
Project Roadcast 2 was a project accomplished by MOWIS and the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamic (ZAMG) together with partners including Hutchison 3G Austria, Ford Telematics research based in Aachen and RISC Software GmbH. Based on this project, a prototype for national road telematics weather information and warning systems could be developed.
Within the scope of the project, the operational conversion of a high-resolution unique meteorological prediction system in Austria (INCA) was accomplished. Meteorological data such as temperature, wind, cloud cover, and precipitation can be forecast over the entire country, with as yet unachieved prediction quality, on a 1 Km grid of Austria. The results of this project will feed further development of all products of MOWIS.
